5 Interesting Solar Energy Facts

1. Solar power is the most abundant energy source on earth

Did you know that the amount of potential solar energy that falls on the Earth’s surface in 1-hour equals the total annual energy consumption of everyone on the planet. To understand this in more manageable parts; 20 days of sunshine can create the same amount of energy as all the Earth’s coal, oil, and natural gas combined! In other words the sun as a resource is much more powerful than coal, oil and gas together.

2. Solar and wind are the cheapest source of energy in the world

According to the IEA’s World Energy Outlook and other research projects, solar and wind energy rank the highest in terms of the cheapest renewable energy sources. Both energy sources cost much less than fossil fuel alternatives and continue to become more affordable every year. (March 2022)

3. Today, solar panel efficiency is higher than ever

Most solar panels sold in 2020 have efficiencies between 15% and 20%, according to the American National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The first silicon solar panels were only about 6% efficient.

4. Solar panels can produce power without direct sunlight

Even if the sun’s not directly beaming on the panels – or it happens to be a cloudy day – it doesn’t mean the panels aren’t being capturing  energy which is utilised by the solar panel cells to produce power. But it does make a difference – the direction you place your panels as well as shade from trees and buildings should be accounted for before installation.

5. Solar energy can power an entire home and beyond

Today, most solar panel systems are designed to match your daily energy consumption needs including air conditioners and other large appliances. Net metering for grid-tied systems ensures you always have access to the energy you need. You can also add an energy storage battery to your system and have your own personal backup supply of solar energy.

Solar UPS or Inverter?

Solar inverters that are used in our homes are in fact solar home UPS systems, as they have two built-in chargers:

solar charger
and grid charger and it delivers immediate power supply while the grid power fails.
